A Force For
Economic Development
and Quality of Life

Introduction

Building Bridges Providence is a nonprofit (501 (c) 3) organization focused on supporting economic development and improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods.  Founded in 2016, Building Bridges Providence is a project oriented team of community activists.

Building Bridges Providence was created out of a grass roots campaign to defeat the construction of a new PawSox stadium in downtown Providence on Parcel 4 (public park) in the I-195 Corridor.  We felt that a public park was, and is, the highest and best use for this parcel on Providence’s waterfront.  In 2016, the name “Building Bridges Providence” was chosen when we decided to continue our work in order to secure funding for the Pedestrian Bridge, which crosses the Providence River while providing a centerpiece for both economic development and public use in our Capital City.

Building Bridges leads effort to stop Fane from building on P42

We need to dredge our river - it is a key to our on-going effort to develop Providence and our quality of life.

We believe economic development and quality of life go hand in hand.  Companies and institutions require employees to grow and flourish.  Employees want a rewarding job at a good company which also offers a living environment that brings meaning and satisfaction to their lives.  With the millennials who are now the focus of many tech companies, this is often called a “live, work and play” environment. Surveys reveal that millennials want to live near where they work, do not want to own a car and often prefer riding a bicycle or walking to work.  The I-195 corridor and surrounding neighborhoods also need to provide a variety of housing options.   These millennials want to socialize locally in a walkable and bicycle friendly city which also offers good public transportation.  They want public parks, walk-ways, water access, great restaurants, theater, music and a vibrant nightlife, all a short distance from where they live and work.  Building Bridges Providence is working to identify and provide the quality of life components required to support our growing neighborhoods as they experience robust economic development.
